Parisi valle donation – the works

Parisi-Valle donation includes 2085 pieces: 915 graphic works, 439 two-dimensional works, and 325 three-dimensional works, plus over four hundred ancient finds and coins.
The donation can be considered, as Carla Burani wrote, “a contribution to modern and contemporary Italian art from the 30’s to the 80’s and can be compared to the most advanced European artistic experiences which are here part of a specifically Italian historical and artistic context.

Giorgio De Chirico Giacomo Balla

Works by members of the old avant-garde join those of lesser-known artists who re-interpreted the stimuli received by them and represent a wider artistic and cultural environment.
The variety of ways chosen to represent reality – and therefore to relate to reality – is expressed through rhetorical, formal, informal, metaphysical, surreal, rational-concrete, neoplastic, geometrical images (even if these kinds of definitions are arbitrary) and offers a complete picture of the various aspects of Italian art and culture of this century…”

Premise to the donation

“…considering that culture in general – and visual art in particular – is going through a difficult time, we want to support the ethical principle that visual art works must belong to social communities which have the right to enjoy them, as opposed to being commercialized or kept away from the public in private collections.  That can only be possible if the works are collected in decentralized areas, as art historians such as Ragghianti, Ponente, Menna, Argan, Pedio and Tallarico maintain. Hence the idea of contributing to this goal through a donation and the creation of a museum panel, both of which will help develop an innovative project and concrete and rational informative values in the field of visual arts.  This project can represent a prestigious and innovative point of reference, especially for Maccagno, positively different in terms of its interactive and disciplinary relationship with the public, absolutely free from every kind of bias and external influence.”
From the official act of donation, April 18, 1997
