Press release

Our research in local and contemporary art continues; this time it’s Sandro Negri’s turn to enchant us with his works. Negri was born in Virgilio, in the province of Mantova, in 1940. He is a self-taught artist who’s had a wide and intense activity both in Italy and abroad.

His first personal exhibition was held in 1970, while the first monograph on his works (by Dino Villani) was published in 1976.
During the first part of his artistic journey he works on realistic landscapes and human beings, showing his interest in the existential condition of people and the social context in which they live.
As years go by he concentrates more and more on introspective matters, defining more and more precisely his own vision of the world, the territory he lives in, and the rural life, turning his art into evocative suggestion.

In 1989 he opens a studio on Rue Chevert in Paris; he works alternatively here and in his studio in Palazzo Cavalcabò (a palace from the seventeenth century) located in Montanara di Curtatone (near Mantova).
A huge number of writings by many critics bear witness to his intense activity.
Silvana Editoriale published an important, comprehensive monograph by Raffaele de Grada and Claudio Rizzi in 2004.
In 2005 Rossana Bossaglia wrote the introduction to the catalog of an exhibit of his works in Milan.

Exhibitions of his paintings are frequently organized not just in Italy, but also in countries such as Sweden, Holland, England, France, and the United States, where he’s also given lectures and lessons in universities and cultural centers.
Negri makes his knowledge available for social and educational purposes as well by giving free art lessons to students.

The exhibit is designed by Claudio Rizzi and coordinated by Ad Acta Associazione Culturale; here you’ll be able to see 40 paintings selected from works from both the past and present of this artist.
Nicolini Editore publishes the catalog of this exhibition, which describes Negri’s personality and artistic journey thru his works.

Regione Lombardia, Provincia di Varese and Provincia di Mantova sponsor this exhibit, which is part of a long-term project by Museo di Maccagno whose purpose is to explore the works by local artists who have given a significant contribution to modern art’s evolution.
