This exhibition of Franco Rognoni’s works is one of this season’s highlights, a gem in a series of exhibits that have in common the desire for a deeper knowledge of those artists who have a close relationship with our lake, Lago Maggiore.

Rognoni was born in Milan in 1913; since his young age he shows a particular interest in all artistic subjects. In 1934 he starts to work as an illustrator for several important magazines and newspapers. Artists such as Sironi, De Pisis, and Modigliani have a deep influence on him, and his passion for books brings into his art German expressionism’s techniques both in terms of graphics and painting. He moves to Luino during the war, and there he focuses on his works; his artistic output grows to include a wealth of illustrations and etchings. Thanks to his amazing talent he also works, in the following years, as a scene designer and costume designer for the famous theaters Piccola Scala and Fenice di Venezia.

Rognoni’s artistic universe is greatly inspired by the classic stories by Omero, by medieval stories, by the art of the sixteenth century and the seventeenth century’s baroque, by the Bible, and by contemporary art. His passion for the representation of the ancient world is so intense that he even paints such scenes on the walls of his house, on his furniture, on his doors... he wants to live inside his paintings.

This exhibit has been made possible by the good offices of Mrs. Mariuccia Noè, Rognoni’s widow.
