Pressrelease
After a series of
exhibitions dedicated to specific themes and collective exhibitions, the modern
art museum of Maccagno goes back to displaying the works of single personalities
from our time and territory, starting from Paolo Schiavocampo.
Schiavocampo was born in 1924 in Palermo. He studies architecture in Rome and
Milan to move on, later, to art studies at the Accademia di Venezia, as well as
Scuola di Pittura (painting school) of Guido Cadorin, and finally at the
Accademia di Brera in Milano where he studies with Manzù as a teacher. His first
exhibit is in 1950 in Rome (Mostra Nazionale della Giovane Pittura Italiana).
From there, he begins a long and intense artistic voyage that will take him to
New York in 1964 and in Germany in the late 90’s. He stays in both places for
long periods of time.
His art evolves from the existential realism of the 50’s to the informal
expression of dashing and spontaneous strokes.
Along with an artistic partnership with Salvatore Scarpitta and Giuseppe
Spagnulo, Schiavocampo gets intellectually involved in the renovating movements
of the 60’s and 70’s. He slowly develops those personality traits that will lead
him to isolate himself and totally focus on his work from the 80’s on.
Schiavocampo is both
protagonist and witness of the Italian artistic evolution in the second half of
the twentieth century, especially in Lombardy.
His work slowly grows from social themes realisticly represented to a portrait
of intellectual isolation and of the solitude of reasoning confronted by
reality’s harshness. He often finds inspiration in ancient philosophy and
classic works.
His sculptures remind of architectural creations, with the concept of
aggregation and community as a constant underlying feature; these works, in
spite of their relatively small size, carry within themsleves the notion of
large constructions, such as public buildings or squares. This would eventually
allow him to land the design work of large monuments and buildings.
His rich personality, helped in its growth by his love for literature and music,
has left a mark in the young minds of his students throughout the many years he
devoted to teaching. Even today, his mark in the evolution of art is very
evident.
Designed by Claudio Rizzi,
coordinated by Ad Acta, sponsored by Regione Lombardia and Provincia di Varese.
The exhibition will display a selection of around forty paintings, from some
works from the 80’s to the more coherent recent production.
Biography and full documentation regarding the paintings that will be displayed
can be found in the catalog by Silva Editrice.
