T The Exhibits

Fondamenta Occidentali - Giorgio Vicentini

On Sunday 16 August I turned 69, and 49 years of my life have been dedicated to painting.
Day after day the signs representing my thoughts have made the diary of my existence thicker… the works on display from September 5 in the beautiful Parisi Valle Museum reflect my total and unceasing love for all kinds of surfaces.

Welcome to the heart of my solo exhibition entitled Fondamenta Occidentali (Western Foundations).

The works on display cover a period that goes from 2013 to 2020 and follow a complex series of thematic cycles. A very precise concept is behind each work chosen by the curator, Clara Castaldo.

We start with VERTICALI (Vertical, 2017), acrylics on eight 4 X 223.5 cm aluminum bars.
The polyptych painted with mixed media is captured in its metaphysical fixity, and each ray measures its own intimate and singular time.

The four TEMPORA (Tempora, 2019) acrylic and beeswax on wooden discs with a diameter of cm 80 speak a fluid and mysterious language that seemingly drinks from the deep pools of memory.

The small CASSAFORTE (Safe, 2020) acrylics on wood (23 X 31 X5 cm) carefully protect all the secrets of painting as in a vacuum.

QUADERNI DI TOKYO (Tokyo Notebooks, 2020) acrylics and Tesa tape on wood (29.7 x 21 cm): this small series of works in A4 format is inspired by Japanese culture. Delicate colors and shadows build a fabric in the form of silent writing.

PASSWORD (2020) acrylics and beeswax on wood (22.5 x 10.5 x 8 cm) are small works sealed within compressed wood where the outlined colors turn into a bulwark against any possible attack from the outside.

ARIA CONCRETA (Concrete Air, 2019) acrylics and beeswax on wood (86 x 86 cm) - art plays with the past, the present and the future on this panel in an attempt to build a new status of light.

IMPASSIBILE (Impassible, 2017) acrylics and beeswax on wood (86 x 86 cm) the metaphysical contrast of dark colors seems to ask us for new reflections and thoughts, sheltered from contemporary chaos.

GRANDE ARIA CONCRETA (Great Concrete Air, 2016) acrylics and beeswax on wood (86 x 86 cm). Even secret riddles have solutions that come when one least expects it, and everything becomes comprehensible and clear.

SOLO UN SEGRETO (Only a Secret, 2017) acrylics and beeswax on wood (86 x 86 cm) – Golden shades representing trophies of ancient battles tell us that humans on their journey can cross unimaginable boundaries.

FLESSIBILITA’ DEL FIGLIO UNICO (Flexibility of the Only Child, 2017) acrylics, Fabriano paper and beeswax on wood (86 x 86 cm). The natural okoumè wood hosts a black ascetic form painted on Fabriano paper. The very thin projection created by the paper becomes a tattoo on the surface. The two pyrrole red margins define the end and the beginning of the painted page.

SOUNDCHECK (2020) acrylics and beeswax on wood (60 x 60 cm). This work is entirely dedicated to music, which is here imagined as a cymbal that can play the most vibrant colors.

COLORE CRUDO (Raw Color, 2012-2013-2014)
Acrylics and polifoil on canvas.
These are the oldest works in this exhibition. The linen canvases embrace outlined surfaces of polychrome polifoil. The painted areas seem to be organizing a sort of theatrical play.

While the works ATTRAVERSARE LA NOTTE (Crossing the Night, 2020), ATELIER GIUNGLA (2020), SEMINARE (Sowing, 2020), INCONTRIAMOCI DOVE INIZIA L’ORIZZONTE (Let’s Meet where the Horizon Begins, 2020), MIRROR (2020) and ORIENTALE (Oriental, 2020), (50 x 100 cm each) bear witness to the enthusiasm generated by a very recent research on unexpected encounters between sign and color.

ARAZZI VOLANTI (Flying Tapestry, 2019) acrylic on Bindakote 24 x paper (70 x 50 cm) is a large polyptych designed to represent a whole, large earthen tapestry. Within these surfaces we witness the violent and sensual amorous encounter between white and black.

FONDAMENTA OCCIDENTALI (Western Foundations, 2019-2020) ballpoint pen on semi-transparent Apex (29.7 x 21 cm). This small but interesting series of works the exhibition is named after speaks of the delicacy and resistance of surfaces. The black pen engraves its law in the air, a law that is made up of perimeters that become areas and areas that become perimeters again.
Through the use of this black and strong sign, the artist wants to build a solid foundation for the future.
